Viresco and Fish Health Considerations
Viresco AQUA was initially created to help to improve the health, growth and disease resistance of fish on commercial fish farming ventures. It was soon discovered that it also suppressed blanket weed and other algae and of course this was a nice bonus. Viresco products improve the health of fish too.

This is how it works. When Viresco is used in pond water, the microbes that it contains compete for both food and space with other microbes that are naturally present in the pond water. These other micro-organisms or bacteria, some of which could form bacterial or fungal diseases on the fish, are not allowed to become predominant in order to create the disease in the first place. The second aspect of improving health relates directly to nitrate reduction. It is acknowledged that fish can live successfully in water containing relatively high levels of nitrate. However, if the nitrate level can be reduced, ideally to zero, then the fish are in better health.
Safety of the Viresco AQUA Viresco KOI and Viresco Digester Aquatic Products
The Viresco aquatic products are completely safe for use in all garden and related fish ponds. The first Viresco product was created for use on commercial fish farms to improve the growth, health and disease resistance of the fish. Its presence in the water was also shown to improve the healing of any wounds on the fish. Understandably, there is no problem using aquatic Viresco where other aquatic life is present, eg newts, frogs, birds, insects or where pets might drink the pond water.
Viresco FILTER-START and Viresco MICROBOOST
Viresco also create a microbial product for the introduction of bacteria into pond filters (pond starter is generic name) to speed up the conversion of ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate (called the nitrification process). A pack of 25g of Viresco Filter-Start will treat filters in ponds of around 2000 gallons or 9000 litres.
One of the ingredients in all the Viresco products is soluble Humate in the form of a potassium salt. This is made from granular Humate, a naturally occurring material that is 70% organic and 30% mineral (montmorillonite clay). Humate is a very good food source for micro-organisms and the granular material, in particular, gives a tremendous boost to microbial numbers. It is therefore advisable to introduce some of this material into the pond water.
Microboost is coarse grade granular Humate which also contains some Viresco Aqua. Microboost is only partially soluble and breaks down slowly over time by the action of micro-organisms. Where there are no bottom drains or the use of vacuums, Microboost should be thrown into the bottom of the pond. Alternatively, it should be placed into the filter, contained in an appropriate mesh bag. The 100g pack will treat about 4000 gallons (18200 litres) of pond water.

Viresco AQUARIUM is a microbial mixture that will clear all algae problems from your fresh water aquarium including green pond water. It is particularly effective at keeping glass viewing surfaces clean without using cleaners. This is the case when used in very large aquariums also. This product will also clear up organic debris.
